Hart was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended George Washington High School, after which, he moved to New York City. His father, Henry Robert Witherspoon, was a hardcore cocaine addict, who was always going in and out of jail throughout Hart’s childhood. This really had a negative effect on their relationship.
His mother, Nancy Hart, had to raise him and his brother, Robert single-handedly. Hart said he had to develop a sense of humor to help his family cope with the troubles of their addict father. Unfortunately, Nancy died of cancer in 2006. Hart has never stopped speaking lovingly of her.
He got married to Torrei Hart; a comedian, back in 2003. They had two kids; Hendrix, and Heaven Leigh. His marriage with Torrei was great in the beginning, but things stopped working out as they had planned. In 2010, they got divorced, but have stayed good friends since then.
After high school, Hart moved to New York City where he attended community college for two years. It was after he graduated that he then decided to concentrate fully on his career in comedy. He didn’t just make it in comedy at first. On several occasions, when he first started out, he was booed off stage, and he even had to take series of odd jobs like being a shoe salesman, to make ends meet. Despite all of this, he didn’t give up on his dreams.
His big break came when he started performing and winning different comedy competitions hosted at different places all over New England. He performed at Comedy Central’s “Seriously Funny” and “I’m Grown Little Man”. These performances pushed him up the success ladder, giving him wider recognition, and landing him film roles in “The 40-Year-Old Virgin”, “Soul Plane”, and “Little Fockers”.
